The Power of Queer & Mixed-Race Identity

Jordan Castillo (he/him)

What does it mean to hold layered identities in a world that prefers simple categories?

For many mixed and queer people (including those who are bi+, pansexual, fluid, or unlabeled) identity can feel questioned, misunderstood, or simplified. We may navigate spaces where parts of us are visible while other parts are erased. We learn to adapt. We learn to read rooms. We learn to explain ourselves...or decide not to.

This interactive workshop begins with a 5-minute spoken word piece exploring the lived experience of being both mixed and queer, including struggle, self-discovery, and the quiet strengths forged in the in-between. From there, participants will engage in guided paired and group discussions around identity, belonging, adaptation, and allyship.

This session is designed to be meaningful for:
• Mixed and queer attendees seeking reflection and connection
• Bi+/pan/fluid individuals navigating invisibility or erasure
• Allies who want to better understand and support identity complexity

Together, we will explore:
• What it feels like to live in layered identities
• The strengths that emerge from navigating complexity
• When adaptation feels empowering vs. exhausting
• What meaningful support and allyship look like in practice

Participants will leave with greater empathy, language for their experiences, and tools for creating spaces that honor nuance and complexity. This workshop is reflective, accessible (ages 13+), and grounded, and invites honesty without requiring oversharing.
