From Riot to Revolution: Queer Liberation & the Art of Making Change

Nicole Vanderheiden-Chessmore (she/her)

This workshop will discuss the history of queer advocacy, lessons we can learn from modern resistance and liberation movements, and how to get connected with the people and organizations that are already doing the work you are passionate about. We will approach queer liberation through an intersectional lense, because not one of us is free until we all are free. The engaging format will help you to identify and utilize your own unique strengths, and empower you to use the skills you already have to make big things happen.

Since well before Stonewall, queer folks have been fighting for the right simply to exist in our own bodies and love the people we love. We have harnessed a wide variety of strategies to confront police harassment, respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, marry the people we love, get appropriate and competent medical care, and live openly and authentically at work, in school, and in our communities.

While we have made amazing progress over the past sixty years, every step forward has been met with backlash. We find ourselves at a moment in history where the forces of oppression are working overtime to claw back our wins. Hatred is enthroned in the halls of power, and immense wealth is being wielded as a weapon.

By drawing on the power and wisdom from your forebearers, you will see that you already have what it takes to meet this moment. By sharing in one another's struggles, you will unite with people across movements to create an unstoppable force. By utilizing skills you already have at your disposal, and by capitalizing on your strengths, you will envision a path forward and walk it with confidence.
